Lazio President Claudio Lotito has claimed he is ‘sorry’ to see Massimo Moratti’s leadership at Inter come to an end.

The oil tycoon sold his majority share in the club to Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir last month, and saw his Nerazzurri team win for the final time last weekend against Verona.

And the leader of the capital club has conceded that it is a sad day for Italian football.

“I’m sorry to see the end of the Moratti era,” he told reporters. “His management of Inter was a romantic story.

“Moratti is one of the real gentlemen of football – he has given so much to the game in Italy, not just from an economic point of view, but also the style on the pitch.

“I hope the new owners can also give that little bit extra emotionally.”
