Diego Lopez insists the Palermo point away to Napoli on his debut “might not seem like much, but to us it’s huge.”

He is their fourth Coach of the season and almost snatched a victory at the Stadio San Paolo, but Dries Mertens wiped out the Ilija Nestorovski opener for 1-1.

“I arrived Thursday and to be honest the team was well-trained, had good stamina and that was reassuring. If the team doesn’t run, you cannot put in a performance like this,” Lopez told Sky Sport Italia.

“I have been on the other side as a player, so I know what it’s like to see many management changes, but the important thing was to come here and play as a team. We needed to be a unit.

“Individually, Napoli and indeed most teams in Serie A are much stronger than us, so we have to work in unison to bridge that gap. Otherwise, we may as well not bother going to the game.

“The President gave me strength too and said many times when we first met that he believes in safety. He told me five times. It’s difficult, there’s a long way to go, but I feel we are on the right track and must encourage the lads.

“If we all believe and work like this, we can do it. The point might not be worth much to those from the outside, but for us it’s huge.”
