New CEO Pietro Lo Monaco explains why he’s at Palermo for the long-haul. “I invested 10 per cent of my wages into the club.”

The former Catania and Genoa director general was drafted in this week, pushing Giorgio Perinetti out of the club and given ‘full powers’ by President Maurizio Zamparini.

“I invested 10 per cent of my wages into the club and have become a shareholder,” Lo Monaco told Radio Deejay.

“It was Zamparini’s idea and I think that now the President will ‘disappear’ from the scene for six months to focus on other things.

“He has given work to many people and spent a lot of money for this club. Today Palermo, like other sides, have to think about how to be self-sufficient. As for the squad, I am optimistic, as we can get back on track with a few good results.”

Lo Monaco had joined Genoa in pre-season, but resigned after only a month due to a disagreement with President Enrico Preziosi.

“I wanted to strengthen the squad, whereas Preziosi was thinking about selling players. I preferred to just walk away, without causing controversy.

“In football you can trade players, but it’s important not to make the fans fall out of love with the team too.”
