Fabio Liverani “released some of that pent up tension” during Genoa’s 3-0 demolition of Sampdoria.

The Coach celebrated his first ever Serie A victory by running on to the pitch to hug the players after Francesco Lodi curled in the third goal.

“My run? After two straight defeats, many difficulties and then a derby like this, at the 3-0 we all released some of that pent up tension. I don’t think these scenes will be repeated ever again,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“The team was perfect, as we found the solution to early struggles down our right flank. I don’t know how much tactics had to do with this change, as it was more a different attitude with everyone pressing the ball. The centre-forwards were exceptional tonight in their work for the team.”

Liverani had used a four-man defence in the first two games, but switched to a 3-5-2 tonight.

“I think a team in our position needs to have different options and these defenders can play with four at the back or three. It’s fundamental for me to have quality in the side and keeping the ball.

“I don’t believe a Coach should go down only one path, if he sees that things aren’t working then he has to explore other avenues.

“Lodi worked very hard on the trajectory of the passing right from the start today, which he didn’t in the previous games, as he is learning to adapt to this role.”
