Fabio Liverani was not too downbeat by the 2-0 defeat to Napoli in the first match and said Parma are working to make their ‘short squad competitive’.

The former Lecce tactician pointed at Gennaro Gattuso’s starting line-up having worked together for a whole season and felt the Gialloblu did well in the first half.

“We assume that when you lose, you can’t be happy,” Liverani told DAZN. “Bit I thought we would suffer more.

“We remember that we were facing a team that has been working together for 13 to 14 months.

“The players have been together for a long time and there’s a good coach. They are prepared.

“But I liked my team a lot in the first 20 to 25 minutes, doing what we had prepared to do.

“Until the goal, the team moved with serenity. The goal was an incident, until then, I can’t remember Sepe making any saves.”

Roberto Inglese and Andreas Cornelius started up front for the Crociati and Liverani, who praised their commitment, confessed the attackers were not ready for the first match.

“Roberto hasn’t played a whole game since October. Cornelius has never played a whole game before today.

“They are players who need to get into shape, and this was not the perfect match. We had the two of them and [Yann] Karamoh, who has been out for 10 days.

“Cornelius and Inglese worked well, I thought it would be worse in these conditions. They had an excellent match.”

Liverani said the ongoing transfer market keeps ‘creating difficulties’ for Parma and works to make the team competitive.

“We played against a team that is fighting for the top four places. The expectations are high, we will try to get to October 5 [deadline of the transfer market] quickly, because it still creates difficulties.

“The owners arrived today, they want to have an impact. Today, we have a short squad and we are working to make them competitive.

“We have two games a head and we must do well.”
