The Giallorossi raced into a 3-1 lead against Napoli at the San Paolo, before Jose Callejon scored late on to give the game a tense finish.

“We suffered under Napoli’s pressure for the first 20-25 minutes, with their technical quality, dribbling and aggressiveness,” Liverani told Sky Sport Italia.

“We could not manage to play our football and we were crushed. Then we showed some courage and put a great side in difficulty.”

Lecce signed Saponara in the January transfer window, and the former Fiorentina midfielder is already making an impact.

“The lad, since we contacted him, has had no doubts. He chose Lecce.

“I received about 25 phone calls from people who advised me not to take him because he is a somewhat moody footballer.

“However we took him all the same.”

Gianluca Lapadula scored a brace against Napoli, and also netted in the 4-0 win against Torino, and Liverani says the striker is finally showing his worth.

“He gets excited in games, today he had two hard defenders to face.

“Sometimes I try to make him understand that he must waste less energy, he must learn to run smarter.

“He’s generous, he’s hungry.

“In a team like ours it’s fundamental.”
