The Croatian forward was jeered by home supporters during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Verona and reacted after a substitution by hurling abuse back at them from the touchline.
He then went on Facebook and got into an argument with supporters, calling them “Italian bastards” and pledging “we’ll meet at the training ground.”
Today Livaja went back on the social network to clarify his position and say sorry.
“I am writing these few lines to apologise to all those who felt offended, but I lost my head against the insults aimed at my mother.
“A few racists also called me a gypsy with even more serious insults aimed at my nationality.
“I hope that I will not react this way again, but also hope I’ll only be criticised for my performances on the field. I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Easter.”
Livaja came up through the Inter youth academy and is no stranger to controversy, as he was frozen out by Atalanta several times for his behaviour.
The most serious incident saw him punch teammate Ivan Radovanovic during a game between ranks, but he had also been suspended for arguing with Coach Stefano Colantuono.
