Marcello Lippi has performed a surprise U-turn and signed a new contract to stay at Chinese outfit Guangzhou Evergrande.

The Azzurri World Cup winning Coach’s new deal will keep him with the AFC Champions League winners until November 2017.

“I have renewed my contract,” Lippi said to Tuttomercatoweb. “They asked me and that is a good sign that there is good harmony between the club and the staff.

“There is a desire now to make progress in Chinese football and get ourselves in line with the European model.

“Diamanti has settled in well, he has been with his teammates for one week and it seems like a lifetime.”

The news comes as a shock as Lippi had recently announced that he would quit club football for good at the end of the current season.

He has now reconsidered and will remain coaching the side he has been with since May 2012.

The 65-year-old had been strongly linked to taking over the reins of the Chinese national team.
