Paulo Sousa’s side have started the season in impressive form and Lippi was impressed by what he saw.

“Last night I saw a great team, I was there at the Marassi, and the impressive strength of Fiorentina struck me,” he told Radio 2.

“This was against a Sampdoria that had not yet lost at home.

“I liked the whole team, especially Bernardeschi. He had crazy determination and desire.

“Is this Fiorentina’s year? It’s the year of strong teams who play well.

“Fiorentina, Roma, Napoli, all of them have their own way of getting results.

“The Nerazzurri have consolidated a defence that is now very strong, and this is fundamental in Italy.

“Sousa? I met him by chance in the hotel after the match and we had a chat.

“I reminded him of a midfield for Juve from 1994 to 1996: Conte, Deschamps and Sousa, in fact.

“Now one coaches Fiorentina with success, one is the CT of Italy and another is the CT of France.”
