Marcello Lippi has joined the calls for the Serie A season to be completed and is still open to managing a national team “not too far away”.

Lippi made it clear he was in favour of resuming the campaign during an interview with Sky Sport Italia from his home in Viareggio, “even if it’s behind closed doors.”

“Today there are no conditions for playing football and I believe there still won’t be in a month’s time,” he explained.

“But when this great danger is averted, I believe the season should be finished, even if it’s behind closed doors.

“It’s not nice to play without fans, but at least watching games on television is still something.

“I’m against extraordinary assignments of titles and relegations. The season must end on the field ".

“This situation is getting long, too long, now and moments of great economic difficulty are emerging, especially for certain groups of people.

“In China they’ve won this battle against the virus with great rigor, especially in Wuhan, and they’ve been able to reopen the entire area and restart operations.”

The 71-year-old was then asked whether he would consider a third stint managing Italy, having stepped down as China’s CT in November.

“I’ve already done that. I no longer intend to coach a club team. Maybe in a few months, when I realise that I no longer want to stay at home, with a national team not too far away, I could get back into a dugout.

“But, in the meantime, we hope that this virus stops killing people. After that, we’ll see.”
