Karol Linetty says he was “honoured” to captain Sampdoria during their cup tie with Cagliari – his first 90 minutes since September.

Samp suffered elimination from the Coppa Italia last night, going down 2-1 to Cagliari, but the match marked a special occasion for Linetty.

“It was an honour to wear the captain’s armband for the first time,” he said after the game. “This was my first whole game after over two months out.

“I’m feeling better. I even tried to score a goal, but I didn’t manage to. We wanted to and could have won this game. We are angry, but now we must think about the League.”

The Blucerchiati also lost to the Sardinians in a seven-goal Serie A thriller on Monday but can bounce back this weekend, when they host an inconsistent Parma.

“We have to think about Parma and the League. We are still bitter after losing to a comeback against Cagliari. Sunday is a very important match, we can’t mess up.

“Let’s turn the page and think about Sunday’s match. We will play in front of our own fans and we must win. When we play at home, we are entering the field with 12 men.”
