Remarkably only one point separates these two sides going into San Siro and Genoa have a game in hand, to be played with Fiorentina.

The Nerazzurri are out of the Europa League, but their final match was Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Sparta Prague, which at least boosted some confidence.

They used a new 3-4-3 system in that game and seem to replicate it this evening with Eder, Mauro Icardi and Rodrigo Palacio in the trident, dropping Ivan Perisic.

Antonio Candreva goes into a deeper role and Danilo D’Ambrosio is a makeshift centre-back, though Yuto Nagatomo can track back and make it 4-4-2 if needed.

Cristian Ansaldi is suspended with Gary Medel and Davide Santon injured.

Genoa are old hands at using a three-man defence, first under Gian Piero Gasperini and now Ivan Juric.

Curiously, Juric was Gasperini’s assistant manager during the very brief spell as Coach of Inter, so it’d be particularly satisfying to upset them at San Siro.

Lucas Orban continues his suspension and Leonardo Pavoletti is injured, so Giovanni Simeone – the son of former Inter hero Diego – leads the attack.

Diego Laxalt and Nicolas Andre Burdisso are also ex-Inter men.

The Grifone have already beaten Milan and Juventus, but have struggled a little more on their travels.

Genoa have not beaten Inter at San Siro since a 3-1 result in March 1994, followed by three draws and 10 defeats in all competition. That includes an epic 5-4 thriller in April 2012.

This has traditionally been a very entertaining fixture, as the last six editions at San Siro have provided 17 goals.
