Lucas Leiva is enjoying a renaissance at Lazio and “knew from the start this was a strong team” as they target Champions League qualification.

The Biancocelesti sold Keita Balde Diao, Lucas Biglia and Wesley Hoedt over the summer, but are doing better than ever, currently three points clear in third place.

They’ve also reached the Europa League Round of 32 and the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

“There is so much more to be done and we must continue like this,” the former Liverpool midfielder told Mediaset Premium.

“There is so much more to be done and we must continue like this,” the former Liverpool midfielder told Mediaset Premium.

“We have to keep on winning, because there are many more games and so many teams trying to finish in the top four. Before the Winter break, we were fifth, yet now we are in third place and must keep pushing to reach the Champions League.

“I knew from the start this was a strong team, as they did well last season, and I felt at ease from the first day. I am slowly starting to show what I can do and am very happy to be here.”

Lucas Leiva’s performances for Lazio have been so impressive that there are reports he could get back into the Brazil squad.

“It would be very difficult because the World Cup is coming up so soon, but there’s another break in March and if I continue like this, then I can hope for a call-up. At this moment, I am focusing entirely on Lazio.”
