Both President Claudio Lotito and Coach Simone Inzaghi assure Lazio will replace Stefan de Vrij with “an even stronger player”.

The Dutch centre-back is joining Inter on a free transfer this summer, with his contract in Rome expiring on June 30.

Yesterday the Biancocelesti players, directors and fans got together for their end of season party at the Stadio Olimpico, and the owner addressed the fans.

“We want to build a house on rock, not sand,” Lotito insisted.

“We need to combine sporting results with financial ones, so we can take Lazio to where we deserve to be in a stable form.

“When a player goes away he’s replaced by a stronger one. [Lucas] Biglia left, [Lucas] Leiva arrived and we all know what happened this season.”

This was taken as a reference to Stefan de Vrij, and Inzaghi was more explicit in his pronouncements, beginning by apologising for the Champions League failure.

“We didn’t manage to do it and we’re sorry,” Inzaghi said.

“The pride for the win in the Supercoppa remains. And I’m sure we’ll replace De Vrij with an even stronger player.”
