Lazio physiotherapist Alex Maggi has apologised for ‘inopportune behaviour’ after insulting Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso in a touchline row.

Last night’s game at the Stadio San Paolo erupted into several flashpoints, including a bitter exchange between the two sets of staff.

At the final whistle, it blew up again, with video footage showing Lazio director Igli Tare trying to lead a furious Gattuso away from a member of Lazio’s entourage.

The camera picked up Gattuso telling him to ‘say damn Terrone to my face, if you dare.’

Terrone is an insulting term used for people from the south of Italy and had also been caught on camera last month when a member of the Atalanta staff aimed it towards a Napoli fan.

“In my many years of this profession, I had never offended anyone,” wrote Lazio physio Alex Maggi in a statement.

“Last night, during the game against Napoli, I let myself down with inopportune behaviour and I profoundly apologise to everyone, in particular Mister Rino Gattuso.”
