An investigation was launched after three Lazio players – Ciro Immobile, Lucas Leiva and Thomas Strakosha – repeatedly tested negative in their internal tests, but positive for UEFA.
The situation came to a head on Friday when it emerged the same swabs that tested negative at the lab Lazio were using in Avellino, proved to be positive at the Biomedical Campus in Rome.
The Biomedical Campus alerted the local health authority (ASL), which is why these players were then ordered to self-isolate on Saturday afternoon.
They all left the training ground just before the session, despite the fact the club medic had initially cleared them to play against Juventus on Sunday.
According to news agency Ansa, representatives of the Guardia di Finanza investigative team swooped on Formello and the Futura Diagnostica laboratory in Avellino to gather evidence and documentation.
There are growing demands for the Lega Serie A and FIGC to create a centralised testing system, or at least agree to some uniformity on what degree of viral load constitutes a positive COVID test.
