Lazio have hit back at Antonio Candreva claiming the Inter midfielder “insisted on being sold”.

The Italian international gave an interview yesterday in which he expressed his disappointment at not being given the captaincy, as well as claiming the Biancocelesti put him up for sale.

“It was legitimate for Candreva to want to become a Lazio symbol wearing the captain’s armband,” head of communications Arturo Diaconale responded.

“The decision of the Coach [Stefano Pioli] was different last year though.

“Candreva, from December last year, asked with insistence to be sold and we can say that his insistence and his discomfort, also because we hadn’t satisfied his demands, caused complications in the dressing room, creating a non-relaxed atmosphere.

“His destination was accommodated, he insisted on going to Inter when he could have been sold to other teams like Napoli.”
