“I’ve only ever wanted to be a footballer. I never imagined doing anything else. It was my childhood dream to play in a World Cup, but unfortunately we didn’t play as well as we could have.
“My favourite position is anywhere in midfield. Perhaps in the hole behind two strikers. Who am I most similar to? I think of Luka Modric and Andres Iniesta.
“I know I have to take more responsibility on the ball. That is something I am working on. Over the last year I’ve improved the mental side of my game. I’m more confident of my ability now.
“I’d love to win the Champions League and to be successful with Croatia too. The best moment of my career was signing for Inter.
“How will I celebrate my first goal at Inter? First I have to start scoring, then I can worry about that…”
Kovacic was asked about some of his Nerazzurri teammates during their US tour.
“Nemanja Vidic is an amazing player with vast experience. We need someone like him. Mauro Icardi is a nice lad and a great player. I hope he goes on to score tons of goals for us!
“I bonded more with the players who speak my language, so Samir Handanovic, Zdravko Kuzmanovic, but also Juan Jesus. Yuto Nagatomo is a great laugh besides being an excellent player.
“The all-time best player? I’d say Ronaldo, while in Croatia it was Robert Prosinecki. Dejan Stankovic is my inspiration, both on and off the pitch.
“Would I call Zinedine Zidane or Steven Gerrard my idol? They’re both great players… but Zidane is Zidane.
“Why should Americans support Inter? Because we’re FC Internazionale: we were born international.”
