Juventus are hopeful that Andrea Barzagli will return from injury, but Giuseppe Marotta admits the club are looking at targets in January.

The Bianconeri defender has not featured for the club this season as he battles with an achilles injury and no return date has been established for the centre-back.

The Italian international’s prolonged absence has led to speculation that the Old Lady will target another central defender in January, with reports today reiterating the Serie A Champions' interest in Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches.

Sportmediaset claim that Spurs would ask for €10m for the Romanian in January, with Juventus preferring to loan the player, with an option to secure the defender’s signature permanently in the summer.

Giuseppe Marotta, director general of the Turin club appeared to confirm the club are searching for a centre back.

“We’re monitoring [Barzagli],” Marotta insisted to reporters at Gazzetta dello Sport’s ‘Bello del Calcio’ awards.

“We think he can return, even if we’re looking to increase the quality of the squad in January.”
