Gianluca Pessotto believes a Champions League win for Juventus would be just reward for the work done at the club since 2006.

The Old Lady were demoted to Serie B for their involvement in the Calciopoli scandal ten years ago but bounced back to Serie A at the first attempt, then gradually re-asserted their dominance in Italian football.

Despite racking up the trophies at home, however, the Turin club have failed to translate this into European success. This is something that the former full-back believes must change soon.

“Winning the Champions League is difficult, it depends on a lot of different factors,” Pessotto, who retired just weeks before the controversy of 2006, told Calciomercato.

“It is pointless to hide that it’s an important objective. The club deserves it, it would be a great reward for the work done since 2006.

“It would be a just reward. The team is strong, let’s hope they can give us this great satisfaction.”

Pessotto, who won Europe’s premier club competition with Juve in 1996, then praised new signing Gonzalo Higuain as one of the world’s best forwards.

“I am very happy that he is at Juve, he is one of the best five or six forwards in the world.

“It shows that Juve have great appeal again. [David] Trezeguet was maybe the highest-profile player to have arrived at Juventus, even more so than [Zinedine] Zidane.”
