Fabio Quagliarella’s early diving header was cancelled out by a Krzysztof Piatek penalty, but Samp goalkeeper Emil Audero kept the scores even with a series of great saves.

“This result really hurts, because we absolutely deserved more,” Juric told Sky Sport Italia.

“We only allowed them one shot on goal, we played with courage and created so many dangerous situations. To play a derby like that and not win is a huge regret and I’m really sorry for the lads.”

It ends a run of three consecutive defeats, but Juric was asked if he was still at risk of the sack from President Preziosi.

“The team is making advances in every game, I am satisfied with what we are doing, then some might have a completely different vision to mine and want to make different decisions.

“Either way, I am calm. We are improving, I can’t just throw everything out and start again, nor kill the players for every detail. We have been unlucky, but also lacked a bit of that killer instinct in front of goal.”

It was surprising that Juric was called in to replace sacked Davide Ballardini, something the Croatian fully admits.

“I wasn’t expecting to be called back for the third time. The lads are training hard and putting in good performances, then others can make their decisions, that is the situation and it’s not a problem for me.”
