“The lads deserve lots of plaudits,” Juric said at a press conference after they all-but-avoided a quick relegation.

“They’ve done something wonderful and much of the credit goes to them. They’re an extraordinary group, very tight-knit and throughout the season they spurred each other on in difficult times.

“As for now aiming for Europe, it rarely happens to be in such a situation. It’s forbidden to relax now, we have to give our best, take advantage of this great opportunity and then see how it goes.

“I hope we don’t take any kind of fulfilment from this. These situations rarely happen in our lifetime and so we have to give 100 percent, going beyond the injuries, heat and all the inevitable difficulties of such a particular period.”

The coach’s contract expires at the end of the season, while the likes of Amir Rrahmani and Sofyan Amrabat have already signed elsewhere…

“I think about [the future], like everyone else. I’ve been talking about it with the club for some time now.”
