Joao Mario insists “Inter are part of my past now”, though he’s only on loan at West Ham United.

The Nerazzurri bought the Portuguese midfielder for €40m plus €5m in bonuses after Euro 2016, but he struggled to make an impact at San Siro.

In January they sent him to the Hammers on loan, with a €40m option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

“I’m in a new league and I’m trying to adapt quickly,” Joao Mario told reporters in Portugal ahead of the Gala Quinas de Ouro.

“I’m happy with my new adventure and I hope to finish the season well. Inter are part of my past now. I could have played more, but football is about that too.

“Now I’m happy and that’s what matters most.”
