Joao Mario joined Inter in a deal worth €40m plus bonuses two years ago but appears to have no future at San Siro, although the Euro 2016-winning midfielder failed to secure a move away during the summer.

“He wasn’t understood in Italy,” Gomes, who played for Fiorentina between 2000 and 2002, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He wasn’t understood in Italy,” Gomes, who played for Fiorentina between 2000 and 2002, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The fans put him under too much pressure and Inter went through a couple of difficult years, but remains a champion.

“He’s a cut above and he has wonderful feet. He just needs to play and feel the confidence of his club so he can do his best.”
