FIGC Vice-President Demetrio Albertini explains cancelling tonight’s planned Italy-Luxembourg friendly due to the earthquake “had to be done.”
The earthquake struck at 9.00 local time this morning in the Emilia area, which had already been hit by a powerful quake last week.
The friendly match was set to be played at the Stadio Tardini in Parma, which is in the Emilia region.
“Our of respect for the consequences of the earthquake that struck the Emilia-Romagna region, and in particular out of respect for those people and their families who are suffering, I think cancelling the game had to be done,” said Albertini.
At least 15 people have died in the latest quake, which registered at 5.8 on the Richter scale.
There was also a security risk, as there continue to be aftershocks felt in the region.
It means Cesare Prandelli’s Italy now have only one friendly test before Euro 2012, playing Russia in Zurich on June 1.
