“For all passionate football fans, tomorrow will be an important day,” Nespoli said in a video posted from the space station.

“Our national team takes on Spain at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid for World Cup qualification.

“Italy and Spain are at the top of the table, and this match is of fundamental importance for World Cup qualification.

“I’m sure all Italians will, as always, be behind the national team tomorrow.

“And those who, like me, are far from home will do even more to cheer for Italy. Because of that, I’ve decided to wear this shirt which the President of the FIGC [Carlo] Tavecchio gave to me before this mission.

“A special salute to our CT Ventura, who last season started a very promising path with a lot of young Italians who can mature alongside great champions who have made history with our national team.

“To conclude, a salute to all the team. Remember, on the pitch, just like in orbit, it’s the team that wins.

“I wish you all a big good luck tomorrow and, from space, Forza Azzurri!”
