Pippo Inzaghi saw Benevento’s 2-0 victory over relegation rivals Genoa as ‘a show of maturity’ and a ‘real turning point.’

Le Streghe were already mid-table and this result further consolidated their cushion from the drop zone.

“We mustn’t get big-headed, because we know where we’ve come from and have to keep our feet on the ground,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“This was a real turning point for us, as Genoa might be missing some big players, but we can introduce old guys like Sau and he can still score goals.

“It’s a pity the fans aren’t able to enjoy watching this team in Serie A, as they suffered last time the club was in the top flight and would’ve loved to relish these victories. The important thing is that we keep on our toes, because the moment we let go an inch, we’re done for.

“You can’t ever take a rest in Serie A, or you will get punished. I know that well and I have to start that attitude from the touchline to the squad.

“I knew this mission was a battle to secure our safety, but with this hunger, spirit and determination, we can do it. This was a real show of maturity and we need to keep on that track.”

There was some confusion on the late penalty for Marco Sau, as it needed VAR and an on-field review.

“We don’t like talking about referees, but they told me it was a pretty clear foul and I don’t know what the referee thought he’d seen, but fortunately the VAR intervened. We had a similar incident against Verona and VAR didn’t call him, so I’d just ask for a little more attention even for a newly-promoted side like Benevento.”
