The Coach was appointed on a permanent basis when Marcelo Bielsa failed to show up, having taken over for the end of last season.

Since then he has won praise for playing a young team while climbing to fifth in the Serie A table.

“Is this a good squad? I never had any doubt about that,” Inzaghi said in his pre-Cagliari Press conference.

“I knew the group from last year, there were a few problems at the beginning of pre-season but they always followed me.

“Is this Inzaghi’s Lazio? I think so, I like the spirit of those who go onto the pitch. Those who go onto the pitch know what I expect of them.

“We’re all pulling in the same direction, and in the last two games we haven’t got the reward we deserved.

“If we keep going as we are though, we’ll get a lot of satisfaction.”

Is Inzaghi more brave than other Coaches in his willingness to play youngsters?

“I don’t know, obviously I know the lads much better because I trained them [in the Primavera side], but above all they’ve proved they deserve space.

“They’ve trained with the others since the [pre-season training camp at] Auronzo and they’re on the same level.

“It wasn’t my goal to put in young players, they deserved it. They gave me a selection headache, so well done them.”

Another of Inzaghi’s proteges, Mirko Fersini of the Allievi never got the chance to show what he could do, dying in 2012 from brain injuries sustained in a moped crash.

“I often think that Mirko would probably have been here too. He had a great future ahead of him, he was a promising young man.

“His memory is still alive, every day we train at the ‘Fersini’ [the training ground] and I see the lads he grew up with, so he’s always in my thoughts.

“He’ll always be with us.”
