The Aquile are flying again after a 2-0 victory away to Dynamo Kiev on Thursday, setting up a Europa League quarter-final with RB Salzburg.

“We really wanted to reach the quarter-finals and put in a great performance in Kiev against a side that was unbeaten at home this season,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We needed something extraordinary, we had the right approach and after 20 minutes I was calm, knowing we were on the right track.”

However, there too Lazio were furious with the referee, as the goalkeeper handled outside the box and there were penalty appeals from Ciro Immobile.

It comes after a series of controversial decisions in Serie A, even with the use of VAR, including last week’s 2-2 draw with Cagliari.

“The incidents are clear for all to see. Our current position in the table does not reflect the performances. We have been slowed down by incidents that everyone is talking about. We should in reality be higher up the table. Now it’s up to us and has to act as further motivation.

“We focus on Bologna, hoping to put in the right performance. Roberto Donadoni is experienced and smart, so he’ll do everything he can to make life difficult for us. Tomorrow will be a battle.”

Playing in Europe has taken its toll on the Lazio squad, as Senad Lulic is out of action and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic needs a fitness test tomorrow morning.

“We are surpassing our limitations. The next three months are going to be important, but we’ve done something extraordinary so far this term.

“Considering our prospects and how we were put together, we are in the top eight in the Europa League, went out of the Coppa Italia semi-final on penalties and deserved more in Serie A.

“I heard some were really pleased that we drew RB Salzburg, but I want to remind people they are unbeaten in 33 games between Europa League and domestically, haven’t lost at home since November 2016 and already eliminated Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad.”

Lucas Leiva has scored several decisive goals over the last few weeks, something that was never exactly his strong suit.

“He settled in to Serie A and Lazio at the speed of light. His qualities were already beyond doubt, but it’s not easy to come to Italy after 10 years playing in England.

“I realised how good he was from pre-season training. He wants to understand everything, always asks for an explanation, and has been a fantastic buy.”
