Simone Inzaghi admits Lazio’s 3-0 defeat to Sampdoria was an embarrassing and inexplicable setback. ‘You can lose a match, but not like this.’

The Biancocelesti were missing several key players, including suspended Ciro Immobile, and the lack of strength in depth was all too evident in a humiliating defeat.

“Seeking an alibi in the absentees would be too easy,” shrugged Inzaghi in his press conference.

“Seeking an alibi in the absentees would be too easy,” shrugged Inzaghi in his press conference.

“It’s a bad defeat. You can lose a match, but not like this. Sampdoria dominated us from the first minute to the last. Fortunately, we already have another game coming up on Tuesday, so we can press the reset button straight away.

“We were lacking in determination, in team spirit, and that had never really happened before. Sampdoria put in a great performance, but our attitude facilitated that.

“We must learn from this defeat as a teachable moment, something we have to analyse and understand why it happened. To be honest, I expected a different attitude. We were missing a lot of players, especially on the wings, but we’ve been in that situation before and didn’t respond like this.

“If I’d had the option, I would’ve changed the entire XI at half-time. I didn’t have many other options for the starting line-up, though, so I would make the same decisions again.

“It was a bad slip-up, but we have to get back on track.”
