This was not the result they wanted just days after the 4-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Ciro Immobile saw his penalty saved and 80 seconds later Ibrahima Mbaye scored to put Bologna in front, then Nicola Sansone’s volley sealed it after the break.

“An ambitious and strong team like ours should react differently. It can happen that you miss a penalty and then concede straight away,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“I thought we had the right approach, we dominated the game, but we are here talking about a painful 2-0 defeat, so we must leave these two losses behind us.

“Paradoxically, out of the last four matches against Sinisa Mihajlovic’s Bologna, this is the one where we struggled the least, yet we lost 2-0.

“We need to be more determined in front of goal, get back on our feet against Torino midweek and I don’t want any excuses about Champions League fatigue.

“I’ll be honest, I am worried by the lack of a reaction we showed after negative incidents. Admittedly, our luck has not been great over the last couple of games, but a strong and ambitious team like ours has to react differently.

“The team played the way it needed to. We should’ve been more concentrated on the first goal, while the second was a stunner. Perhaps we could’ve played for another 100 minutes and not scored.

“Objectively, these two defeats hurt us and the team needs to get back to winning in order to put this behind us. Pepe Reina didn’t make a save today, yet we lost 2-0.”

It has become increasingly evident that Lazio lack strength in depth, particularly in defence, as Luiz Felipe and Stefan Radu are sorely missed.

“We know what they mean to us, but I don’t want to hear excuses. I am very disappointed by the reaction, because incidents happen in games, it’s about how you react to them.

“Felipe Caicedo has this problem with the sole of his foot, but he trained better over the last three days. We’ve got a lot of options in attack, I need to rotate them well and make sure they can all reach full fitness, but obviously Joaquin Correa and Immobile are our first choices.”

Lazio director Igli Tare said the priority must always be a top four finish.

“We know that, and we know the teams we are competing against, but right now we have to focus not on what has been and instead look to what is yet to come.”
