Pippo Inzaghi was fully prepared for Benevento to take some risks against Milan, noting they ‘also created plenty of chances and showed courage.’

Le Streghe continue to slide down the standings after this 2-0 defeat at his hold hunting ground of San Siro, decided by Hakan Calhanoglu and Theo Hernandez goals.

They now have one win from their last 18 games, but that was a 1-0 result at the Allianz Juventus Stadium, and one point from five rounds.

“We knew that we would run some risks here, but we also created plenty of chances and both goalkeepers had to make some tough saves,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

Inzaghi was visibly irritated with the referee just before half-time when Ismael Bennacer risked a second yellow card.

“We conceded an early goal and so had to open up a bit more. If you come to San Siro and park the bus, you will concede sooner or later.

“A team that needs to save itself has to show courage, so even if we allowed a few counter-attacks, I’d prefer that to showing fear. In the end, there were 20 shots to 14, so that showed the spirit we had here as a newly-promoted club.

“My main regret is the second goal, as our defenders weren’t lined up properly and we had worked on that. The first goal was a well-worked move.

“I knew Iago Falque could only really play one half, so I hoped this risk would also get minutes in his legs for the next game. Gianluca Caprari wasn’t fit to start either, so we tried a 4-2-3-1.

“We started this journey last season, now we want to finish it by securing our Serie A status and I believe this squad has what it takes to stay in the top flight.”

This was a rare return to San Siro as an opponent for Inzaghi, who was a Milan hero as both player and coach.

“The game with Milan will never be the same as any other, but coming here without the fans is a different atmosphere.”
