Inter director Piero Ausilio has defended and backed his club’s summer transfer strategy: “My conscience is clear.”

The Nerazzurri brought in Nemanja Vidic, Dodo, Yann M’Vila, Gary Medel and Dani Osvaldo, but are seen in some quarters as still light up front.

“My conscience is clear, and I believe that we had our directives and we met them all,” sporting director Piero Ausilio has told Inter Channel today.

“The objective was to stay within the parameters given and we have done that. The salary budget has been reduced and now stands at about €70m.

“The average age of the team is 25.6 years, almost two-and-a-half years less than in recent years.”

Ausilio was asked about rumours over potential exits that did not bear fruit.

“We never even considered the sale of Kovacic and Icardi. They were part of our design from the beginning.

“And we worked ahead of time to ensure that Vidic would come to Inter – he's a player of great skill and personality, and he is already passing on his enthusiasm to the rest of the team.

“Our mercato wasn't based on hot shots and propaganda, but on players that would be of practical use.

“Dodó, Medel, M'Vila and Osvaldo had the profiles we were looking for and they will help this team grow.

“The offensive department is well covered, with Icardi, Osvaldo and Palacio supported by Puscas and Bonazzoli – we want to give these younger names an opportunity.

“We wanted the team to be balanced, and balance is found in numbers and logic – the team needed depth in every department, without overcrowding the squad.

“The strength of a team isn't measured by the number of players.”
