“I didn’t even talk to the President about him, but I did speak with Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and he told me that we didn’t need him.”

The cost of signing Cesar, in terms of a transfer fee and his wages before tax, come to around €20m.

A move back to his native Brazil is also complicated by the imminent closure of the transfer market at 19.00 Brazilian time tomorrow.

Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League is still a possibility for Cesar, with new Coach Andre Villas-Boas looking to bolster his squad in a push for European football.

Cesar made over 200 appearances for the Nerazzurri between 2006 and 2012,winning a number of trophies including five Scudetti and the 2010 Champions League.
