The Italian international re-joined Inter from Newcastle in January 2015, with the total fee for the loan and redemption coming to €4.5m.
With the Black Cats thought to be paying €6m [£5.1m], it represents a profit on a player who made just 19 Serie A appearances in a season and a half.
