According to the latest rumours emerging from Italy, Thohir is hoping to keep Mazzarri on for the rest of the season before finding a more permanent replacement.
The main target is current Ajax boss De Boer, who had already been wanted by Thohir when he took over the club a year ago, but Mazzarri was under contract.
De Boer represents many of the elements the Inter patron is looking to propagate at San Siro, including the use of promising young players from the academy.
He also played for Barcelona and Ajax during his successful career.
De Boer has a contract with Ajax until June 2017, but could be bought out from that deal.
