Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne has given an update on his injury situation, and reveals his idol is Alessandro Del Piero.

The diminutive Italian international was injured during November’s win over Fiorentina, and was later confirmed to have sustained cruciate ligament damage.

An injury of that type would usually see a player out for the rest of the season, but Insigne says he hopes to return by March.

“I’m better day by day, but I have to stay calm,” the 23-year-old told Sky.

“The important thing is that when I return to being available for selection there are no more problems.

“I think I can be ready by February or March.”

Insigne also discussed Napoli’s form in his absence, revealing that he’s always been a fan of the club – although his idol represented a rival team.

“I’ve always supported Napoli, and I followed them to every game. When I started to wear this shirt I dreamed of playing at San Paolo.

“My idol? I’ve never hidden the fact that it’s Alessandro Del Piero. I always liked the way he played and the way he conducted himself on the field.

“He also called me when I got injured, I hope to meet him soon.

“As for Napoli’s season, in the last few games something has changed. I hope the team can continue as they have been, and bring even more people to the stadium.

“The Juve match? We’ve always done well against the big teams, with the smaller sides we’ve dropped points. We started 2015 in a good way against Cesena, now we face a major test for the Scudetto.”

Argentinian forward Gonzalo Higuain scored twice during Tuesday’s win over Cesena, and Insigne believes his teammate is one of the top players in the world.

“He’s a great striker who gives us something extra,” Insigne explained.

“If you spend seven years at Real Madrid it means you have great qualities. He has everything required to be one of the best strikers.”
