Josip Ilicic has explained the reasons behind the two gestures that infuriated Fiorentina supporters last weekend.

The Slovenian international drew the home support’s ire in Week 11 of Serie A for two actions during the home defeat to Napoli.

Three minutes into the game, the former Palermo player dropped the black armband which served to commemorate the passing of Viola legend Giovanbattista Pirovano.

Ilicic was substituted and jeered off the field during the 1-0 home defeat, before turning to the crowd and putting his finger to his lips.

Now the 26-year-old has offered and explanation and an apology.

“I accept criticism but I don’t take personal offences,” Ilicic has reflected on Fiorentina’s official website.

“I threw the black armband on the ground because it kept falling from my arm – I didn’t want to show a lack of respect to anyone.

“Also, I didn’t really feel uncomfortable for the fans’ whistles at the end of the game against Napoli.

“That gesture was aimed at somebody who talked badly about me and my family. It was instinctive, but I am ready to say sorry.

“I just want the best for this shirt and this group. I always want to give my best for this shirt.”
