The Argentine forward was the subject of heavy transfer speculation over the summer, with the Gunners and Napoli interested in securing his services.

The 23-year-old has since signed a lucrative new five-year contract at San Siro, which includes a release clause of €110m.

However, it remains to be seen how the Nerazzurri will deal with the breakdown in relations between Icardi and the Curva Nord branch of supporters.

The player received a hostile reception during Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by Cagliari, following comments he made about fans in his autobiography. To compound matters, he missed a penalty and Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti refused to rule out the possibility of him losing the captain’s armband.

As a result, English media are claiming that Arsenal could revive their interest in a player they have long admired and tried to sign in the summer.

Napoli, who recently lost Arkadiusz Milik to long-term injury, may also be tempted to try again to lure Icardi to San Paolo.

The huge release clause remains a potential obstacle to any deal, but Icardi’s previously indispensable status at Inter may change depending on how attempts to resolve the situation progress in the coming days.
