Mauro Icardi claims Inter “needed a Coach” like Luciano Spalletti, explaining his approach is “like a hammer”.

Inter have impressed in their first few outings under Spalletti, beating Chelsea and Bayern Munich in the International Champions Cup, and Icardi is loving the former Roma trainer’s “beautiful” approach to football.

“What I knew about Spalletti? Not that much. I saw him play very good football with Roma and more so Ansaldi, who worked under him at Zenit and had spoken to me about him with enthusiasm” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“What’s struck me about him? His attacking game. He likes beautiful football and has clear ideas on how to put it into practice.

“One past mistake we must avoid? There were attitudes that I didn’t like, especially during the week, but Spalletti has understood things quickly and we’re trying to improve in all respects.

“It’s crucial that we’re more positive and have a different mentality.

“We needed a Coach like him. As soon as Pioli came in, he was able to send positive values to the team.

“We followed him and had won nine games out of 10, but then there was a sudden drop of heads and it ended the way it did.

“Spalletti’s like a hammer and we’re changing our attitudes. With him, any distractions aren’t allowed.

“My first conversation with him? He said simple things, that we had to do things better than we did the past, that it was necessary for us to change our way of working on the pitch, during the week and on Sundays.

“He was right because if we continued as we did before, we wouldn’t have gone anywhere.”
