This was the first defeat Iachini has experienced since replacing Vincenzo Montella over the Christmas break.

Martin Caceres had replied to Antonio Candreva, but there was no stopping the Nicolò Barella volley.

“It was a hard-fought game, with many young lads who were not accustomed to this type of knockout fixture,” Iachini told Rai Sport.

“We allowed Inter far too much in the first half, gave the ball away cheaply and should’ve been more focused. We started better after the break, had the chance to win it with Dusan Vlahovic, but unfortunately we didn’t finish it off.

“Barella scored a fantastic goal and that kind of magic can decide a match.”
