Massimo Moratti has compared and contrasted former Inter Coaches Helenio Herrera and Jose Mourinho, concluding both are ‘great Coaches’.

Herrera was Coach of the Grande Inter side of the 1960s, that won two European Cups and three Scudetti, whilst Mourinho engineered the treble-winning success of 2010.

The man whose father was President at the Nerazzurri during Herrera’s era and he himself was President during Mourinho’s time has now reflected on the two tacticians’ similarities and differences.

“Herrera played a swift football, where everyone was running and the ball ran especially so,” Moratti has recounted to Mediaset this week.

“I remember that initially there were some criticisms because it was said that the speed was at the expense of accuracy, but this was the thing that made us win.

“The key was the pressure, which was not in the slightest considered, which he put in the field and changed football with.

“Mourinho? I cannot say he has changed football because he has a different way to deal with the games, he studies the opponent and knows how to change the game as it is needed. Therein lies his amazing ability and why he has won so much.

“His strength was being able to adapt even to a beautiful style of play. The similarity lies in the genius and the fact that they are two great exponents. Moreover, both are bold and famous in their ability to communicate.

“Yes I am a Mourinho fan, because I have experienced him directly, I liked his character, he won straight away, even if in his hand he found Roberto Mancini’s valuable work.

“Herrera arrived playing a game that was all attack, it was a lot of goals and was thrilling. It was a game also of risk, a few defeats did arrive, and then he changed the game.

“Everyone spoke about a great defence, but the reality was that the team reached the goal within three touches.

“In him I saw a great humility. A few times he confronted my father and this made him a true professional, attentive to every aspect.

“The difference between the two characters is that Mourinho was involved a lot with the team from the psychological point of view, Herrera was more a sergeant, he was adored by the players like Mourinho, even though he was also highly respected.”
