New Inter captain Samir Handanovic is “proud” with his role and thanked his teammates for the clean sheet against Rapid Vienna.

The Nerazzurri won 1-0 in Austria thanks to a Lautaro Martinez penalty, giving them a strong position going into the second leg of this Europa League Round of 32 at San Siro.

“I am above all happy with the result, as that is what really matters. If we keep a clean sheet, that’s good for everyone,” Handanovic told Inter TV.

“I am above all happy with the result, as that is what really matters. If we keep a clean sheet, that’s good for everyone,” Handanovic told Inter TV.

That was also thanks to a splendid save on substitute Christoph Knasmullner.

“That’s what I’m there for. Obviously, I always hope that I don’t need to make many saves, but if I am needed, then I am there.

“I think winning 1-0 is a good result, as defence starts from the attack, so everyone puts in the work. It’s very important not to concede goals.”

Handanovic was inevitably asked how he felt at being the new captain, after the armband was stripped from Mauro Icardi.

“Every player is proud to be the captain of an important club, but we ought to be talking about Inter and not individuals.”
