Napoli regularly disregarded the Europa League in previous seasons, but Hamsik made it clear the Partenopei would try to win the second-tier competition next year.

“We gave everything, but it didn’t work out and we’re sad,” the midfielder told his official website after Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

“My shot at the start of the game? Curses… it was only a few centimeters off-target! We started well, but Liverpool made us suffer.

“In the second half they had several chances, but we also created many chances to score and we didn’t have that little bit of luck.

“We’ve had some great games against big clubs in the Champions League. We played very well, but it wasn’t enough to go through.

“Going out like this hurts, but we have to pick ourselves up and focus on the trip to Cagliari.

“The Europa League will start in the spring and we want to go as far as possible in it.”
