Marek Hamsik shrugged off beating Diego Armando Maradona’s tally and pointed out Napoli “were created to score goals.”

The Partenopei earned a 3-0 victory away to Palermo with Hamsik on target along with a Jose Callejon brace.

“It’s certainly an important win. At the start we struggled and were not very precise, but as time went on we dominated possession and chances, so the victory was the correct reward,” he told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“We are a team created to score many goals, regardless of whether Gonzalo Higuain is there or not. The important thing now is to not concede and we achieved it today.”

Today Hamsik scored his 82nd Serie A goal for Napoli, one more than Diego Armando Maradona and now only trails Antonio Vojak’s 102 from the 1930s.

“It’s certainly a personal satisfaction, but I am more satisfied with the victory and what the team is doing. I really didn’t think I would beat his goal record, as I am a midfielder.”

Napoli begin their Champions League campaign on Tuesday against Dinamo Kiev.

“We are ready and the Champions League brings a lot of motivation.”
