Marek Hamsik has regrets, as his goal against Athletic Bilbao gave Napoli hope, “but didn’t achieve anything.”

The Slovakian had given Napoli the lead at the San Mames, but Athletic fought back to win 3-1 on the night in the Champions League play-off.

“It was a goal of hope, but in the end it didn’t achieve anything,” Hamsik told Sport Mediaset.

“The Champions League was an important target for us and unfortunately we were unable to get it. Serie A begins this weekend and we must try to focus on that.

“We are professionals and every game must be taken on the right way. We realise it’ll be difficult in Genoa on Sunday.

“In the locker room our heads were down and we were all quiet, which is normal in these situations. We’ll talk it over tomorrow, as now is not the time.

“The stadium is extraordinary and the fans really gave their team strength.”
