Marek Hamsik has admitted that Napoli’s title challenge is on the ropes after a disastrous December.

The Azzurri were giving leaders Juventus a real fight, but successive losses to Inter and Bologna, plus a two-point deduction, means they are now fifth – 10 points shy of the Old Lady.

“Juventus are the strongest side out there and they’ve shown that over the last two seasons,” the midfielder told Il Mattino. “They’ve really taken off now.

“But nothing has changed for us and the season is still long.

“The Champions League zone is close and our objective is to finish as high as possible in the standings.”

Asked about this week’s deduction as a result of the match-fixing betting probe, Hamsik insisted he wasn’t looking to the past.

“We’re just concentrating on football matters,” he added. “We no longer have two points, it is as if we drew a game that we in fact won. Let’s put this situation to one side and move on.”

Napoli face Siena this weekend.
