Siena have explained the reason behind their decision to sell Luis Neto during the January transfer window.

The Portuguese stopper, signed in the summer from Nacional, joined Zenit St Petersburg at the start of this month for a fee of €6m.

“Neto had half of Europe following him,” sporting director Stefano Antonelli told Radio Sportiva on Wednesday. “We were just waiting for the decisive offer.

“Zenit were the team who pressed hardest for him and it was pleasing to sell him to one of the top 10 clubs in Europe.”

The 24-year-old, who agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the Russians, was also strongly linked with Napoli last month.
