Francesco Guidolin feels Udinese’s entire Europa League campaign collapsed with “a distraction on one goal.”
The 2-0 first leg deficit had been wiped out within 14 minutes against 10-man AZ Alkmaar, but the Dutch side got a crucial away goal that put them through 3-2 on aggregate.
“What didn’t work? Quite simply a distraction on one goal,” explained Coach Guidolin on Mediaset.
“It made us irritable and we were unable to get 100 per cent back on track after that. Losing Mehdi Benatia to injury so early on was certainly not the reason we didn’t go through, but it was another bout of bad luck.
“After the break we tried every possible way to achieve qualification, but there were many lads who just aren’t accustomed to this stage.”
