In the wake of Delio Rossi’s dismissal on Wednesday evening for physically confronting Adem Ljajic on the Artemio Franchi touchline, former tactician Guerini agreed to step in as Coach to take temporary control.
In reflecting on taking the role at the struggling Viola, Guerini, who has over 20 years of coaching experience in Italy, was also at pains to make clear that he will then be returning to the role of team manager once the season is ended.
“More things have happened to me in these past few days than in the last 10 years,” reflected the 59-year-old in his Press conference after training today.
“I could not say no, even though I never wanted to return to the bench. I said yes for the sake of Fiorentina. It is also always been a dream and one I could not say no too.
“That night Andrea Della Valle asked me to help him and I could not say no. But my return to the bench will be only for these two games, then that gate will be double locked. Now we have to get the point we currently lack for survival.
“The team has suffered, they are confused, but we will react. We must lose this mental suffering for the game at Lecce, which is the only thing that matters.”
Guerini told about how he has handled the players this week in light of recent events.
“I’ll make a remark – I’m not going to be boxing anyone, all the players like me. And anyway, within two games they will not have time to hate me.
“They too understand this, it is their future on the line as well as that of Fiorentina. When things go wrong, everyone loses.”
